We’ll Pay You to Get Your CDL, Then Put You in the Driver’s Seat

The TransWest Employer Sponsored Training Program (ESTP) provides paid training for individuals interested in earning a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Passenger (P) endorsement and starting a career as a professional driver. Participants are hired as trainee drivers and receive wages while completing required CDL coursework and behind-the-wheel training.

TransWest Employer Sponsored Training Program (ESTP) Overview

The ESTP is designed to meet Washington State and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training requirements.

Upon successful completion of the program and licensing, participants transition into a driver role at TransWest.

Class B CDL Training Requirements

Minimum 80 total hours of training, including:

  • 40 hours classroom instruction: Permit preparation, traffic laws, pre-trip inspections, vehicle control basics

  • 14 hours street driving: City and highway driving practice

  • 8 hours backing training: Straight-line, alley dock, off-set, and parallel parking maneuvers

  • 8 hours proficiency development: Skill reinforcement and refinement.

  • 10 hours lab, range, and observation: Air brakes, vehicle systems, and inspection procedures.

Passenger Endorsement Training

Required for All TransWest Drivers

All TransWest drivers must complete Passenger Endorsement (P) training to receive a Passenger endorsement on their CDL. This training includes instruction in:

  • Passenger safety and management

  • ADA compliance

  • Baggage and cargo handling

  • Railroad crossings and emergency procedures

What’s Covered in the ESTP Curriculum

All participants complete a comprehensive theory curriculum followed by a behind-the-wheel practical training and assessment.

Basic Operation

Orientation, control systems, dashboard functions, pre- and post-trip inspections, and basic vehicle control.

Vehicle Control Skills

Shifting/operating transmissions, backing and docking procedures.

Safe Operating Procedures

Visual search, communication, speed and space management, night operations, extreme driving conditions.

Advanced Driving Practices

Hazard perception, skid control and recovery, jackknifing prevention, emergency maneuvers, and railroad-highway grade crossings.

Vehicle Systems & Maintenance

Identifying and diagnosing malfunctions, roadside inspections, basic maintenance.

Cargo & Compliance

Handling and documenting cargo, environmental compliance issues.

Regulatory Requirements

Hours-of-service rules, fatigue and wellness awareness, drug/alcohol regulations, medical requirements.

Emergency and Safety Procedures

Post-crash response, external communications, whistleblower/coercion protections.

Trip Planning & Operational Skills

Effective route planning and operational considerations for safe, efficient driving.

What You’ll Earn and What We Require

  • Compensation and Employment

    Participants are paid while completing their CDL and Passenger Endorsement training.

    All training is provided by TransWest-approved instructors.

    Employment with TransWest as a driver is offered upon successful program completion and licensing.

  • Program Requirements

    Hold a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days before testing.

    Submit test date requests at least 3 business days in advance (earlier is encouraged).

    Meet all applicable state and federal CDL requirements.

    Achieve a minimum score of 80% on all theory assessments.
